Raccoons do their business - Latest

Its been a while. Rob and Roy the noisy raccoons, visit at regular intervals, and I hesitate to mention it, but I must, they have made the base of our cedar tree their latrine. "Up with this I will not put", to quote Winston Churchill, so we're trying to work out a mechanism of deterring the beasts from visiting in such a manner. Various sticks and staves have been tried to no avail. So if you know how to discourage raccoons (without shooting them), then please meander down to the comments section and leave your advice. It would be so much appreciated.

Spotted this in the Sept 20 edition of the Georgia Straight, and though of you right away.
Blend six habanero or Scotch Bonnet peppers with two cups of water. Mix at high speed for two minutes. Pour into a container and set aside for a day. Strain liquid through cheesecloth. Put liquid in a one-quart spray container. Fill to top with water. Apply liberally.
Be careful if you have small kids hanging around, or pets. Be sure to wash vegetables, as residual spray will add heat.
This is actually intended for squirrels, but I'm thinking their masked cousins will get the hint too.
Good luck!
